Ahh, the Month of Love is upon us! Happy February!
Reading- At the start of the year our class set a Reading Goal: Each student will grow 1.5 years developmentally as a reader. In order to check in to see how this goal is progressing, I have been assessing two students daily during DEAR time. Great news! So far, as a class we have all grown substantially in our reading skills since the start of the year! In order to give our reading an even bigger boost, the students recently helped me organize the library by reading level. We have even filled our book boxes ONLY with books at our individual reading levels! Please support this goal by reading appropriate level books with your child at home each evening! Thank you for your continued support!
Writing- We are expert reviewers! We have written our opinions on books, movies, food and have even had to argue for statements we don’t agree with! With all of this persuasion, our ideas are leaking into our UOI as well! Have your children been trying to persuade you to make some more sustainable choices at home? I bet! Coming up in writing, students will be working on ‘How To’ pieces. Expect to continue to learn WITH your 2nd grader!
Spelling – Students continue to use (Structured Word Inquiry) SWI to better understand how the spelling of base words can be affected by adding a prefix and/or suffix. This month we continue to examine the relationship between the <i> and <y> team!
Math- After measuring our classroom from top to bottom with various items (sticks, cubes, shoes etc.), students are figuring out that using different units of measurement make comparing size difficult. This month, we will visit the magical Land of Inch and find out how rulers came to be. It will be really nice to finally get the same measurements as our classmates when measuring the same object.
Unit-
Now that we know how our everyday things are made, we can begin to make personal choices that sustain our environment! So now we have a new question: Where does our food come from? Does it just magically appear in the grocery store? Can the choices we make before we sit down to fill our belly affect the environment? Hmm, this unit will require lots of detective work…
