January Newsletter

Welcome back from a much-needed vacation!  I hope you had a magnificent time enjoying family and/or friends and that the days were loaded with enriching experiences!

Reading- Following our unit on Literature Circles, we will now continue with DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) and Guided Reading.  During Guided Reading, I will be meeting with different groups each day to read and discuss a short story together.  We will be using our various CAFÉ Menu strategies and decide together what skills we need to ‘zoom in’ on to improve!

Writing- Don’t be alarmed if your child suddenly becomes extremely convincing with regard to getting that pet they’ve always wanted. This month in writers’ workshop, we will be working on the art of persuasion.  Students will learn how to develop a piece of writing that influences the audience to agree with a particular opinion or argument they are passionate about. So, if you find yourself watching a Kiddie Movie with your child instead of that new release you have been waiting to see, remember that crafted persuasion could be the culprit.

Spelling – Students continue to use (Structured Word Inquiry) SWI to better understand how the spelling of base words can be affected by adding a prefix and/or suffix.  Now that the students know when to use an –s or –es suffix for plural nouns, we will begin to examine what happens when a word ends with a –y.  Students will also begin to search for ‘exceptions to the rules’.

Math
- Foot/meter, inch/centimeter… These words will begin to float around during dinner each night.  That’s right, our students are diving into the wonderful world of measurement!  We are exploring different methods of measuring and practicing the use of implementing different measuring tools.  Keep your eyes peeled for exciting home connections supplement this unit!

Unit-
Do you find your student has become extra conservative with regard to electricity and/or water use?  Are they asking questions about where the garbage/rubbish goes after they put it in the bin?  Do they want to know what resources everything is made of?  If so, they are bringing their learning home!   We are half way through our unit on sustainability, and the students are just now beginning to realize how their choices affect the planet.  Encourage this curiosity by discussing the unit with them.  Point things out that you do to reduce waste and/or to reuse resources.
