April Newsletter

April Showers Bring May Flowers!

Student Led Conferences:
Be sure to attend your scheduled conference on Thursday, April 12.  Remember to bring your son/daughter, as they will be the one leading the conference.  Please remember that this is not the time to speak directly with the teacher with regard to your child’s progress.  If you would like to schedule a separate meeting with the teacher, please do so via email: wbirdwell@aisdhaka.org

Upcoming Informance:
You are invited to the 2B “Children Around the World” informance in the Performing Arts room on Thursday, April 19 from 10:15-10:45am.  Be sure not to miss it!

Reading:
Newly organized Literature Circles and Guided Reading groups for April will ensure our reading progress is diversified and challenged as we finish out the year!   We will continue to use our CAFÉ Reading Strategies.  Ask your child to share a strategy with you the next time you read together!

Writing:
What is something each person knows ALL about?  Themselves!  Currently, each student is working on an ‘All About Me’ piece.  This non-fiction expository writing will display how culture makes them who they are: unique!  Throughout the process, we continue to examine traits of good writing through daily writing mini-lessons and sharing with classmates.

Spelling:
Students continue to use (Structured Word Inquiry) SWI to better understand how the spelling of base words can be affected by adding a prefix and/or suffix.  We will continue working on word sums and matrices.

Math
:
As we wrap up our unit on graphing, students reflect upon what their data shows them.  What information does their graph show?  How can you compare information on graphs?  Upcoming, we will review and expand upon the most fundamental of math skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Unit:
Our cultures make us unique and make us who we are.  As we examine this Central Idea, students are finding out what we can learn from others’ cultures.  We each brought in a box that was filled with items that define parts of who we are.  Following mini-presentations led by classmates, students are beginning to spot similarities and differences between cultures.  Students are inquiring about how culture shapes us and continues to shape us as we grow.  As we reflect on our findings, we may be surprised by what we learn!
