September Newsletter

Welcome to 2B!  So far, the year has been fantastic!  We are really enjoying getting to know one another!

Reminders:
If you would like to discuss your child's progress, or if you have any questions/concerns, please email me at wbirdwell@aisdhaka.org.  If you would like to come in and volunteer to do a read aloud, or to share expertise in any of our units of inquiry, then again, please email me!

Some students have had trouble with personal items being lost.  If your child wants to bring money or other valuables to school, please have them talk to me about safe places to put these items.

Language Arts:

Writing - Since school began, we have been launching our writing workshop while examining the writing process.  Students have been starting by drawing stories and then following up with writing the stories behind the pictures.  We’ve been working on revising or, adding details to our writing. I have really enjoyed sharing and listening to individual stories during daily workshop time.  We will continue examining writing as a process.  "When you are done, you've just begun!"

Word Study - The <C>
We’ve been working on the sounds the <C> makes during our word study activities.  Students have created rules that explain when the <C> makes the /S/,  /K/ or /CH/ sound.

Reading -  Each week we have been discussing, studying and practicing various strategies to be used during DEAR time.  We have been talking about the students’ behavioral expectations and the different ways in which we can help each other become better readers.  Ask your child to share one of the strategies they have practiced during CAFE time!  You may learn something too! ;-)  Students will be setting reading goals for themselves and self-evaluating their progress starting during the month of October.

Math
We’ve been learning all kinds of things in math so far this year! Some of it may seem like more of a review, but it is always good to brush up on our problem solving and math computation strategies!
We’ve practiced reading an analogue clock, how to count money,  how to create and read arrays, prime numbers, finding sums of numbers that make 10, distinguishing odd from even numbers, looking at different patterns and the list goes on!

PYP Unit:  Authors and Illustrators

During this unit, we have been exploring all about how authors and illustrators express themselves.  We have been learning about the differences between fiction and non-fiction books, how illustrators express different authors' ideas within their art, and for what purposes books are written.  We’ve discussed the purpose of books: to entertain, to teach, or to inform.  We’ve also become serious authors and illustrators ourselves, while using different mediums to express our unique and individual ideas.  Ask your child about these activities to see what has been their favorite!
